OFRENDA ART NIGHT with Free Art Collective

  • The Flying Squirrel 285 Clarissa Street Rochester, NY, 14608 United States (map)

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos with us and honor the lives lost of our queer community members by making a commemorative altar!

We are partnering with @rochesterrainbowunion to host a special art night to honor those we have lost in our community. We will be making “ofrendas” or altars to honor our loved ones, which are dioramas that feature pictures and depictions of the individual, hobbies, favorite activities, pets, favorite foods, and other parts of their life. We ask that you bring a copy of a photo of a loved one to include in your altar, and a shoebox if you have one. We will provide all other supplies you need.

This activity is inspired by the idea of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Traditionally, Dia de los Muertos is used as a chance to remember the positive love, connection, friendship, and lives of those who have passed. We are co-hosting this event with a local community member who is Latine (specifically a Chicano), who hopes to share this cultural element with our LGBTQ+ community, honoring both its traditions and allowing it to be shared with our LGBTQ+ community. These ofrendas would be shared at public LGBTQ+ spaces in the Rochester community, such as bars, restaurants, libraries, and our community center.
